Our Story

Lulu Café opened in July 2009 after twenty years in the restaurant world. We wanted something smaller, more personal, a place that felt like home. With two young daughters and a shared love of food, this café became our way of bringing people together through baking and hospitality.

The name “Lulu” has its own story. Back in 1993, we discovered a little restaurant in Amsterdam called Lulu. We loved it so much that we promised ourselves that if we ever opened our own place, we would carry the name forward. That promise became reality first with Lulu Restaurant and later with Lulu Café.

Baking runs in our family. My grandmother filled the house with the smell of figolli and sponge cake, while my mother turned every gathering into an occasion. On my husband’s side, his mother’s Gateau Marie became a family classic. After she passed, the recipe was passed to my mother and lives on today as our famous Mama’s Cake. It remains one of our best-loved creations and a symbol of everything Lulu’s stands for; home, care, and tradition.

From our Kitchen

Many of our cakes come from family recipes, including Easter figolli, lemon drizzle, banoffee pie, cassatella, and Mama’s Cake. Over time, we have added new favourites inspired by travel, our daughters’ ideas, and our customers. The menu changes with the seasons, light and fresh in summer, rich and comforting in winter.

Step inside Lulu and the first thing you notice is our display of fresh cakes and the smell of coffee in the air. The space is cosy, friendly, and full of familiar faces. Breakfast, brunch, or afternoon coffee, it’s a place people come back to again and again.

We are not a chain and not a home kitchen, but something in between. Every bake is made with care, using quality ingredients and traditional methods. What matters most is the connection, the stories, the regulars, the laughter, and the feeling that you are always welcome.

Celebrations and Everyday Moments

From birthdays to weddings, we bake cakes that mark special moments and tell each customer’s story. Some are ready within a day or two, others take weeks of planning, but all are made with the same love that started Lulu’s Café in 2009.

Fifteen years on, Lulu’s remains true to its beginnings a place to slow down, share something sweet, and feel at home.
